Disability History Month

Join us in celebration of Disability History Month here at Warwick!

When is it happening?

16th November - 16th December

What is UK Disability History Month (UKDM)?

This Autumn 2023 UKDHM focusses on the Experience of Disablement amongst children and young people in the past, now and what is needed for the future. UKDHM comes from a Social Model/Human Rights approach, so that all children and young people with long term impairment will not experience the social exclusion of stigma, stereotypes, negative attitudes and socially created barriers in the environment and the way things are organised.

What is your SU doing?

This campaign hopes to highlight disabled students of Warwick and their history, and how their own histories link in with wider history. Through the disability fair, we hope to provide a space for students to understand and learn more about the history of disability, with information stalls from disability charities, SU societies and the University, and potentially an exhibition of how Warwick academics have contributed to disability history (watch this space!).

Alongside this, we have plans underway for a zine-making social, which will again facilitate a space for disabled students to explore their own histories, particularly relating to the theme of youth and childhood. Aside from all of this, the library is hosting a sensory craft social, one that is less related to history but equally as important to provide a safe space for disabled students to come together.
