After Hours
After Hours is one long fever dream that follows Paul Hackett’s (Griffin Dunne) unfortunate and bizarre experiences through the course of a single night. One lesson that can be taken away from Hackett’s night is that sometimes it is just better to stay at home, tucked in your bed. You might not be able to get back if you venture out and your own luck, or lack thereof, might surprise you. This makes After Hours a perfect film to watch during a Warwick Student Cinema AllNighter, when the thought of sleeping in your bed feels like a distant dream. [Hashir]
The warriors
CAN YOU DIG IT??!!!?? It’s 1979, and nine unarmed delegates from every gang across New York City have gathered at midnight in Van Cortlandt Park at the request of Top Dog Cyrus. However, in the middle of proposing a city-wide union of all New York gangs, he is shot and killed by an unknown attacker. His murder is immediately falsely pinned on The Warriors, a gang that rules over Coney Island. Stuck 30 miles deep in enemy territory, and with every gang in New York City vying for their heads, they must fight their way home throughout the night.
A cult classic that captures the danger and griminess of New York City in the 70s. Packed full of brutal fights, eye-catching cinematography that explores New York, an intense dark atmosphere made even more immersive as the second film of our AllNighter, and a copious amount of homoerotic tension. Which I must admit, is my favourite part of the film. I am most certainly biased, but I think this classic alone makes the AllNighter worth watching. So, come join, because I am certain you will dig it. [James Patt]
Mystery Film
It’s the middle of the night. Delirium is starting to set in. You could go home but the allure of a mystery is keeping you planted in your seat. This film holds a special place in my heart and is an absolute cult classic of the genre and decade. Perfectly befitting of the midnight vibe with an appropriate amount of spook for this season, I hope you enjoy this mystery film as much as I enjoyed putting together this Allnighter. Night at the museum
Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is a divorced dad struggling to find a job in New York City. After many of his business start-ups fail, and with his ex-wife’s patience wearing thin, Larry lands a job at the Natural History Museum as the night guard. However, this job is not what it seems, with Larry soon learning the museum comes to life overnight, and it’s his job to make sure nothing gets in… or out. Many famous faces make this an entertaining and comedic watch for a wide audience, starring Robin Williams, Paul Rudd, Ricky Gervais, Rami Malek, and many more. Night at the Museum is one of my favourite non-official romance movies – the tiny Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan are my version of Brokeback Mountain. This is a great feel-good film and a must-watch, if you haven’t already seen it! [Victoria Beaumont]
Die Hard
Sometimes arguably called a Christmas film (I agree!), Die Hard takes the action film formula and delivers an undeniably charming experience. Be it John McClane (Bruce Willis) and his near-perfect fighting and survival skills, or Hans Gruber’s (Alan Rickman) German accent and cartoonish villainy, this film will stay with you till the end. With a fair dose of romance in the background, all bases of a fun action film are covered. With some hilarious moments and admirable action sequences, Die Hard is a film best watched with an audience. Especially during an all-nighter cinema event, as a lot of scientific research shows.
