Your Full-Time Officer team have been working hard this term to help support and represent you. Check out everything they've been up to below.
Will Brewer - SU President
Welcome Week 2022
This year, Will led and coordinated a key area of our Welcome Week engagement strategy, by raising awareness of the Advice Centre's services and by raising the profile of The Dirty Duck & Bread Oven as fantastic food options for students on campus.
End Period Poverty
Will has been working with a company called Grace & Green, who offer environmentally sustainable period products, and working with the University to sign a contract with them to provide free period products across campus.
SU Visits
Will attended visits to other Students' Unions at the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan and the University of Sheffield, and hosted Northampton SU at Warwick. This was a great way to collaborate with other SUs and learn from each other about how to ensure the best possible student experience.
Hamza Rehman - VP Postgraduates
PGR Support Survey
Hamza launched a PGR Support Survey to better understand how we can support PGRs in light of the cost of living crisis, and is supporting the Warwick Low Pay campaign to work through the issues faced by self-funded and international students.
Stand Up Against Islamophobia
This campaign, led by Hamza, aims to raise awareness of how Islamophobia manifests within our society and wider culture, with plenty of events taking place throughout November (Islamophobia Awareness Month).
Financial Support for Migrant PGTs
Hamza has worked to establish more and better financial support for migrant students, who make-up a large percentage of PGT students. In particular, he is reviewing the hardship fund to support international and migrant students.
Anna Taylor - VP Societies
Societies Fairs
Approximately 240 societies had a stall across the two days of the Societies Fairs, during Welcome Week, with a minimum of 12,000 attendees. It was amazing to meet so many of our societies in person - Anna introduced herself and talked to almost every society that attended, as well as dealing with some queries and requests from them. Many societies fed back that engagement is going well and they have a good intake of new members!
Welfare Officer Training
Anna and Emma Birch offered welfare-specific training for Welfare Officers in clubs and societies, and any other interested execs. They had an attendance of over 100 Welfare Officers. This training also featured a presentation by the exec from Autism at Warwick (an SU-affiliated society) on making society events accessible for members with disabilities.
Emma Birch - VP Sports
Ally Scheme
Using innovation funding from last year, Emma secured a tool to automatically match allies with students based on the protected communities and clubs that both identified with/are part of. Many clubs have already submitted 2 allies, and Emma is now promoting the scheme to marginalised communities, in the hope that students who identify with the chosen protected communities will engage with the scheme to encourage integration into sports clubs.
Sports Exec Social
Emma organised a huge sports exec social in The Copper Rooms, where execs could network and share ideas for collaboration. There were approximately 200 attendees - a great turnout!
Sports Club Calendar
Emma produced a calendar showcasing each sports club’s biggest events in Term 1. The calendar has been promoted on social media and in the all-member email, helping contribute to increased club engagement, and has helped clubs attract higher numbers at their events.
Jack Sperry - VP Democracy and Development
Autumn Elections
This year's Autumn Elections, led by Jack and the Membership Services team, saw a healthy number of candidates apply for various SU representation positions. As a result, we had a total of 2354 individual votes, with 6646 total votes for these positions.
Energy Education
Jack has been working with the University to implement the Sustainable Energy Education Policy, passed in the 2021/22 academic year. This will create a 'mock energy bill' for students on campus residences, for the purpose of informing them how much energy they consume and how much it would broadly cost if they were in housing where they had to pay bills directly.
Tomi Amole - VP Welfare and Campaigns
Blackness, Imagination, Liberation
Tomi hosted a series of events during Black History Month, showcasing Warwick’s Black creative talent, creating spaces to discuss issues pertaining to Black students, and facilitating discussion about how the journey toward Black liberation is unfinished. The events so far were successful and well attended, with great feedback on the speaker events and the film showcase, and Tomi is excited to host the final two creative showcases.
Cost of Living Crisis
Tomi has been working hard to provide responses to the cost-of-living crisis. This includes understanding the issues faced by students through NUS and Warwick student data, and setting up a working group within the SU to draw up proposals to the University about how we can better support students during this time. Tomi is working on lobbying the University around hardship funds and transport costs (e.g parking and buses), and putting together resources to make a comprehensive webpage where students can go for advice, support, and updates.
Chih-Hsiang Lo - VP Education
Course Rep System
Chih-Hsiang has conducted an audit of the academic voice pages, Moodle and Course Rep handbook, resulting in a list of recommendations and additions to the Student Voice team. From this, the Course Rep handbook has been updated and the training sessions for Course Reps has taken place.
Education Priorities
Chih-Hsiang has been establishing the SU Education priorities for this academic year, which can be found here.
