After a year-long review, the University are currently implementing a restructure of the Residential Life Team (RLT) in on-campus accommodation.
Following an emergency motion proposed to our Student Council (the Union’s highest decision-making body) by student members of the current RLT, the Students’ Union has taken on a policy to oppose the implementation of the new system, and work with the University to reverse their decision.
We have expressed our serious concerns to the University regarding inadequate levels of consultation during the review, and the impact of proposed changes from a student welfare perspective. Despite this, and the emergency motion, the University are proceeding with implementation.
We are now making sure that the SU is an important part of the conversation with the University, and we want our concerns about the new system (particularly regarding training for new RLT members, and out-of-hours student support) addressed before the start of next academic year.
We will support our RLT students, many of whom are going to lose their homes because of these changes, in their continued opposition to the new plans. We hope that the concerns we have expressed around welfare issues associated with the new system will be taken seriously by the University.
