Who we are:
The UWCA is the premier and most active university Conservative Association in the UK; well-known not only locally but by conservatives across the country.
We represent the university's right-of-center movement and are the most active political society on campus, bringing together like-minded people to not only discuss politics and promote conservative values, but also to enjoy a host of socials, speaker events, and debates.
There has never been a better time to join the UWCA. With trips (at home and away), speakers and socials this year why not check out our offering?
If you're up for campaigning, working with local politicians and meeting those more senior, get involved!
And remember, the vast majority of what we do is social, with debates (sober and not), circles and trips, we've got you covered.
Check out our Website and follow our Socials to see what we've been up to.
Our Chairman for 2023/24 is Hugh Herring.
What we do:
Speaker Events
As the premier university Conservative Association in the United Kingdom, we have been fortunate enough to host a number of thought-provoking and influential speakers in recent years, from MPs such as Andrea Leadsom, Sir Gavin Williamson, Nadhim Zahawi, Lee Anderson, Steve Baker, Desmond Swayne, Jonathan Gullis, and many more, to big beast non-MPs in the party such as Mark Fullbrook and Paul Goodman. We aim to host a speaker every fortnight, often exceeding this.
Follow our socials to stay up to date of the events we've got planned this year, you will not want to miss them!
Port & Policy:
3 times a term we host Port & Policy, with their always being 3 motions to debate. It's the perfect way to take your mind off your studies and let your views be known on the hot political debates of the day or moral questions, whilst enjoying our substantial offering of Port along with cheese and other delicacies. This house believes P&P shows exactly why you should buy a UWCA membership (you pay less to enjoy all the Port).
Socials and Tours
We offer a wide range of socials throughout the year, suitable for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. You can count on there being active socials such as football, alongside classic pub crawls, so we've got you covered if you want distractions from politics.
For those who fancy a drink, we host the infamous Hagueathon each year, with only an elite few ever completing the challenge.
2023 saw the UWCA go on its first ever International Tour with 15 of our members going to Prague for 3 nights in March. The UWCA will be on tour abroad again this spring.
This year we're also pleased to be planning a trip to Parliament.
Campaigning
It is because of our campaigning efforts, both locally and across the country, that we are held in high regard, because no other Association comes close to us. When by-elections come (all too often atm) we always pay a visit.
Locally, we are proud of our strong ties with local Associations and MPs such as Sir Jeremy Wright, playing a key role in many of their well-deserved successes, such as in Nuneaton and Bedworth. We campaign twice a week, getting to know local politicians and making a real difference.
Campaigning is not required to be a UWCA member, but it comes highly recommended as a brilliant way to understand the politics and people of all parts of the country and develop yourself politically. Aside from that, it's great fun with friends, and you often get a meal out of it!
Despite poor local results, the 2023 Local Elections illustrated how the UWCA offfers you the opportunity to stand for elected office yourself, with 13 of our members standing in Warwick District council elections for the Party - not all being paper candidates.
Chairmans' Dinner
Finally, we host a yearly black tie event with a guest speaker every summer. Guests enjoy a 3-course meal and hear from a speaker, followed by an evening of music, great prizes, drinks and (depending on the number of drinks) memories. It's the perfect way to end the academic year. This June we welcomed over 80 guests, including many friends of the Association from across Warwickshire and welcoming back lots of Alumni.
If you're interested in what we do, follow us and drop us a message on our socials, and we'll get back to you promptly. Ultimately, the best way to get involved is to come along and see for yourself. We will be at the Freshers Fair and hope to see you there, as well as at our Welcome Drinks in the Dirty Duck from 18:00 on Wednesday 27th September, where you will meet the Exec and members. The UWCA can run side-by-side with your other society interests, but many members find we offer the perfect social forum for them, defining their university experience and making friends for life.
