Public Speaking Society

Welcome to the Public Speaking Society at the University of Warwick! Founded in 2005 as Warwick Speakers, we've become a vibrant part of student life on campus. Our mission is simple: we want you to succeed. Whether you’re aiming to boost your career, ace your degree, or simply become a more confident communicator, public speaking is a key skill—and we’re here to help you master it.

Public speaking can be intimidating, but it’s a skill like any other—one that can be honed, refined, and perfected with practice. That’s where we come in! Our society provides a supportive, inclusive environment where you can learn, grow, and express yourself freely.

Why join us? The rewards are enormous! Public speaking boosts your employability, enhances your academic performance, and transforms you into an effective communicator capable of building strong relationships. Plus, you’ll develop assertiveness, teamwork, leadership, and planning skills. We’re committed to empowering you and ensuring that you feel welcome and included. Beginners are especially encouraged to join in and give it a go!

What do we do?

MASTERCLASSES

Our weekly masterclasses (Tuesdays, 7-9pm) are the best place to start your journey with us! The sessions are led by our fantastic exec team. You can expect:

Public speaking theory! Every week, members get to learn a new public speaking technique or skill! From body language to confidence building, voice modulation to crowdwork, vocabulary to emotive speaking and more, we cover a wide range of topics!

Amazing activities! Our sessions are always focused on getting you speaking. Don't worry if you're nervous or don't want to take part in a particular activity—although we will always encourage our members to get involved, all of our activities are optional.

Table topics! A series of impromptu speeches where members can apply the newly learnt skills to practice by speaking on a random topic. It's a great way to practice your improvised speaking skills and our amazing members always support new speakers when they want to give it a go! Whether its 10 seconds or 2 minutes—we're here to hear your voice!

Welfare guarantee! Our Welfare Officer (or another welfare trained exec) are always present and will be signposted at the start of our sessions. We have a zero tolerance policy on hate speech, inappropriate behaviour and discrimination in our sessions. If something makes you uncomfortable, we're here to support you and ensure the situation is resolved promptly.

EVENTS AND SOCIALS

We are one of the most active societies on campus and organise a massive range of events throughout the year alongside our masterclasses! Check them out:

Feeling competitive? We host two internal competitions per year—as well as the largest Inter-University competition in the UK!

MENTORSHIP SCHEME

Our mentorship program offers a personalised growth opportunity for public speaking. Whether as a mentee or mentor, you’ll find tailored support to meet your needs! You can join...

As a mentee... and get weekly, customized sessions focused on your goals and progress. Our small group settings ensure personalised attention and a focus on your welfare, and our reporting scheme provides an anonymous way to give feedback on your sessions.

As a mentor... and lead weekly sessions, showcase your skills, and develop leadership in a safe, supportive space. You’ll also gain valuable experience that looks great on your CV and fantastic training led by our Welfare Officer and Director of Education.

At the end of the programme, all mentors and mentees will receive a certificate – it is a great symbol of your experience and an even better platform to join the exec team!

Inclusivity is our priority. We’re committed to providing resources and support tailored to diverse needs, ensuring everyone feels welcome and empowered. If you have questions about accessibility or inclusivity, please reach out to us via email or on Instagram!

Join us every Tuesday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm! And follow us on Instagram and LinkedIn to stay up-to-date on our events and ask any questions. Don’t let nervousness of public speaking hold you back—step out of your comfort zone and start your best story with us! After all, our motto is that the best stories start where the comfort zone ends!
