Warwick University Sub-Aqua Club
Warwick University Sub-Aqua Club features SCUBA Diving and Underwater Hockey rolled up into one fun and friendly club. Here's some more information about diving, underwater hockey, and our club's social side!
SCUBA Diving
Warwick Sub-Aqua is a SCUBA Diving Club with a difference: not only are we a University Club, but we are also a branch of the British Sub Aqua Club, the national governing body for recreational scuba diving.
What do we do?
Our main aim is getting more people into the water. We are passionate about diving, and want to share it. We teach internationally recognised qualifications, with subsidised costs, so that everyone can gain experience in this amazing sport. We have all of our own dive kit avaliable for trainee use or for hire, so here really is the easiest way you can get involved!
Want to learn to dive?
We run try dives at the beginning of each academic year, as well as on request throughtout the term. Please see us at sports fair, check our instagram or email/DM us for more information. If you enjoy the try dive, you can sign up for our ocean diver course, which is aimed at completetly new divers. Please see our website (wusac.uk) for more information!
Already Dive?
Then come diving with us! We do a lot of UK sea diving, in addition to our annual warm-water trip. We also offer more advanced BSAC training such as Sports Diver and Dive Leader for people who already have diving qualifications, as well as some technical and instructor courses. If you're not BSAC qualified (e.g. PADI, SSI) you can still come diving with us! Joining the club means you will be insured to dive in the UK (if you're not already) and you'll be invited on all our trips.
Where do we dive?
Past weekend/training trips have been to Cumbria, Anglesey, Cornwall, Sound of Mull, Farne Islands, St Abbs and Pembrokeshire. Our annual abroad trip takes place at the end of term 2, past locations have included Malta (2023) and Cyprus (2024). The UK's National Dive Centre, Stoney Cove, is less than an hour from campus by car. We often use this flooded quarry to teach one off lessons/courses or lessons that require a minium depth to be reached.
Underwater Hockey
What is Underwater Hockey?
Underwater Hockey (also known as "octopush" or "push") is a fun and challenging sport played by divers and non-divers alike. Using a mask, snorkel and fins players dive to the bottom of the pool (holding their breath) and push the weighted puck into a metal goal. It's a high paced exciting game, with each round typically lasting just a few minutes. Octopush is a serious sport with both national and international competitions, Warwick Sub-Aqua alumni have represented Team GB in the Octopush World Cup.
Can I play if I never have before?
Yes! This may all sound intimidating, but almost everyone in the club was a complete novice before joining, and all of our sessions throughtout the year are beginner accessible. Most of our team (who represent warwick at national competitions) had never heard of octopush before univeristy, and it is one of few remaining sports where you can compete internationally having only started playing at univeristy.
When can I play?
Every Thursday from 20:30-22:00 and Sunday 18:00-19:00 at the Sports and Wellness Hub. Come and try it out at our free taster sessions at the beginning of terms 1 and 2, or just send us a DM and show up to any of our sessions throughtout the term. We have all the equipment you'll need to get started, just meet us poolside in your swimwear! More information is avaliable on our website (wusac.uk).
Socials
We also have an active social side of the club! Last year the society organised meals out, laser tag, pub golf, trips to spoons, minigolf, go-karting and much more. We look forward to seeing you at future socials!
