Come see A Clockwork Orange presented on 35mm film on the big screen in L3!

A Clockwork Orange is the only film I’ve ever walked out of at the cinema. This is, I promise you, meant to be a glowing endorsement of the film: it’s a thought-provoking, unflinching masterpiece, it’s just also… a lot. Especially the first act. Properly unsettling stuff.

All of the icy futurism from 2001: A Space Odyssey is on display here, but this time it feels brutalist and sinister rather than awe-inspiring. Nevertheless, so many iconic images from this film have burned themselves into the public consciousness and it’s not hard to see why.  It’s almost a cliché at this point for me to harp on about a film’s score but – really – Wendy Carlos’ futuristic and pioneering synth-work is outstanding here.

Despite the common misconception, the film was never actually banned in the UK: rather, after its initial theatrical run (passed uncut by the BBFC), Kubrick himself insisted the film be withdrawn from circulation in 1973 after a series of violent crimes in which the film was implicated. UK audiences weren’t able to see it again until after his death in 1999.

35mm shows of A Clockwork Orange are properly rare in the UK and we’ve been working on this project for a while now – a massive thank you to the Warner Archives for agreeing to loan us this very special print. Very much not one to miss out on, this! [Kieran Hall]
