Come see (500) Days of Summer presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

Initially, I put off watching this film for a while. Not because I didn't think I’d enjoy it, but the opposite, really. Briefly put, the plot recounts the 500 days in which Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) knew and fell in love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel), him having a rose-tinted outlook on love, and her not believing in such fairytales. Marc Webb’s directorial debut sees some creative shots, from split-screen perspectives and beautiful doodles to black and white montages of the ‘perfect girl’. The soundtrack is yet another thing I adore about (500) Days of Summer. Everyone is familiar with Zooey Deschanel's classic delivery of that line – “I love The Smiths!” – but The Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition and Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel really hit the mark with the bittersweet emotions of this film. The truth is, everyone has known a Summer in their life, and if you haven’t, then you probably will. Once you’ve been the ‘Tom’ in your own story, this movie goes from romcom to horror-tragedy. But hey, if you’ve been in Summer’s position too, then you get to experience that heavy chest feeling twice as hard! There is no escaping that one! On a happier note, there is beauty and light-heartedness in this film too, and it's nice to see Mathew Gray Gubler play the same awkward nerd in something less intense than Criminal Minds. [Holly Beaumont]
